Description

SU 82 NE LINCHMERE LIPHOOK ROAD
6/31 Shulbrede Priory
18.6.,59
- I
House. An Augustinian priory was founded here about 1200. The buildings that survive formed the south west corner of the cloister and were part of the prior's lodging with undercroft that was the buttery and part of the refectory. These remains were converted into a house in the C16. The building is therefore partly C13 and partly C16.
L-shaped. Hythe sandstone and Purbeck marble. Tiled roof. Casement windows. Gables to west wing. Central ground floor projection. 2 storeys. 4 windows facing south, 2 windows facing west.
The C13 undercroft is groined with a central pillar of Purbeck marble. The refectory
was originally one hall. On the north wall are 3 trefoil arches of the lavatorium.
In the former prior's lodging are C16 paintings of the Nativity. Partly repainted in
the early C17.
