Patshull Hall and N.W. and N.E. wings to north forecourt

Country House. c1750. by James Gibbs, extended later in
C18 and again in mid to late C19 and altered. Ashlar with
hipped slate roofs. North Front: 3 storeys on basement
with modillion cornice and parapet; 2:7:2 bays, outer
balustraded turrets projecting from corners; 7 bay part
has 3 bay central pedimented break. Mostly plate glass
sashes in moulded architraves; cornices to ground floor
windows and to first floor of turrets; turrets have
balustraded panels below first floor windows; small
mezzanine windows to outer bays of central block, continued
as decorated panels in centre. Projecting pedimented mid
C19 Doric porch to arched doorway, with enriched tympanum;
flanked by balustrades to front areas. Lower 2 storey
hipped former coach house and stable wings frame forecourt.
3:1:2 bays with large rusticated, roughly central entries
above which are pedimented dormers; glazing bar sashes.
Set back links with ancilliary wings to outer N.W. and N.E.,
contain niches to match rear of triumphal gateway (q.v.).
South Front: 3 storeys with corbelled cornice and parapet;
2:3:2 windows, the central block projects slightly; plate
glass sashes; 3 centre first floor windows are round
headed with raised key stones and panelled pilasters; small
mezzanine windows to outer blocks continued across centre
as blind panels; external pelmets to first and third floor
windows; French casements to left of central solid verandah
and flanking stairs, supported on rusticated piers.
Interior: Entrance Hall: fluted Ionic pilasters to walls;
modillioned cornice with egg and dart moulding; decorative
plaster ceiling; fireplace in south wall with enriched
Coadestone surround and blind pedimented panel above with
scrolls in each side; marble top stands to each side of
entrance on console brackets; doors to east and west both
with moulded cornice and enriched frieze; door in south
wall with modillioned pediment on console brackets and
enriched frieze leads to the Saloon: tall round headed
windows to south facing balcony; large plaster panels to
walls for former paintings; console brackets to heavily
decorated plaster ceiling; door to east and west both with
moulded cornice. Staircase Hall: magnificent open well
staircase with twisted balusters, pendants and orb finials
to newels. There are several service staircases with
turned balusters; several fireplaces with marble surrounds
and much moulded plasterwork, egg and dart being the most
prevalent type of moulding.
