House, formerly a farmhouse. C15 long house altered in late C16 or early C17 and
with later minor alterations. Haematite rubble walls rendered with thin coat of
plaster. C20 tiled roof replacing thatch. Two brick stacks rebuilt in C20: central
ridge stack and west gable end stack. A two storey, end gabled range of five framed
roof bays with later raised eaves on the south front. Rebuilt west gable and rebuilt
east gable wall: probably C19. A single storey lean-to under a catslide roof may
be the remains of a wing at east end of the south front. A small single storey lean-to
built against the west gable wall is not of special interest. Three unit plan with
cross passage entered from the south between the west and central rooms. C15 range
open to roof except for a loft in the west bay until late C16 or early C17 when floors,
stairs and chimney stack to central room flanking cross passage inserted. South
front: entrance doorway with late C20 door. Late C20 wood casements in earlier
openings with timber lintols to left and right: the larger window to right has C17
ashlar jambs with bead moulds. On first floor, three C20 wood casements, all in
earlier openings with timber lintols: two lights in left and right casements and
single light in central casement. The rear (north) wall has former doorway to cross
passage blocked in lower part and with C20 window in head of the heavy timber doorframe;
at east end of wall a doorway with heavy timber frame and stable doors. In west
gable wall a C20 casement inserted in earlier opening with timber lintol. In east
gable wall a two light casement to each floor. Interior: in central room a late
C16 inglenook fireplace with broadly chamfered stone frame and an outer chamfer to
the right hand pier: worn base stops to the vertical chamfers. Late C16 winding
stair to right of chimney and doorway to passage with solid baulk steps. Inserted
cross beamed ceiling of 6 panels with deep chamfers to the beams. The west room
has a central chamfered bridging beam with scrolled stops and a beam chamfered on
the inner side close to the gable end wall partly enclosed within the later inserted
gable end chimney stack. Chamfer has run out stops with steps. A late, inserted
bridging beam close to the partition with the cross passage. On the first floor
partly exposed C15 roof trusses: at west end a closed truss with the beam cut for
doorway to end room from corridor on north side. The end room originally a loft
closed off by a framed partition with small blocked doorway at south end where soffit
of truss tie beam is trimmed for the chamfered curved head of doorway arch: pegged
mortices for door posts to either side. The second truss is a plain raised cruck
and the third bay a raised cruck with arch braced cambered collar: chamfers to both
faces of arch. The fourth truss has a tie beam and collar and closes the altered
fifth roof bay. Wall on lower purlin on north side chamfered in the third and fourth
bays and similar chamfered upper purlins in the same bays to both sides. The wall
purlins on the south side removed when the roof was raised. Wind braces in two tiers
on the north side visible in the third bay. The third and fourth bay formerly the
open roof over the C15 hall. The fifth bay over the east rooms probably the parlour
and chamfer of C15 house, but later a byre with upper floor approached by stair at
south end, the upper floor closed from lean-to roof by a timber partition. The fifth
bay remodelled in C19.
