Description

NY 60840 24220 BOLTON

5/50 Birdby Farmhouse and adjoining
barn

II

Late medieval house, remodelled late C17/early C18. Coursed rubble (incorporating
river boulders) with quoins; wet-dashed to front with cavetto moulding to
eaves. Graduated slate roof with end chimneys, one stone, one brick.
Cross-passage plan with entrance in outbuilding (entrance from passage
into former byre now blocked). Internal wall thickness suggests house was
extended to rear with present roof being constructed at same time. Symmetrical
2-storey, 2-bay front has two 3-light windows to ground floor and two C19 sashes
above. Late C17/early C18 dog-leg stair has closed string with turned balusters
and moulded handrail. Most original panelled-internal doors survive, as does
heck screen. Outbuildings to west of coursed rubble with quoins under graduated
slate roof; byre at each end and segment-headed opposed wagon doors.
