Johnston Monument at Gilston Parish Church at SW corner of Churchyard

Monument. 1923, (Gill (1964) No 425). Carved stone crucifixion
group about chest height. Christ carved in relief on tapering
cross with slightly tapered arms. In fine lettercutting on cubic
base-block an inscription in memory of Geoffrey Stewart Johnston
killed in Flanders 1915. Separate tapered, pointed stone to
right hand, has Our Lady carved in relief and inscription to Rose
Alice Johnston d 1907. Similar stone on left hand has St John
and inscription to Reginald Eden Johnston d 1922. An outstanding
monumental group with distinctive relief figure-carving and fine
lettercutting. Part of a group with the medieval parish church.
