6/142 Coplett's Cottage and The Mole Hole
II
Pair of cottages. Probably late C17 or early C18 with C19 or early C20 additions.
Plastered rubble walls incorporating some cob. Gable ended slate roof. Rendered
rubble stack with brick shaft at left end, brick stack on rubble base at right
gable end.
Plan: may have originated as one 2-room plan house with a fireplace at each end.
Divided into 2 cottages in the late C19 or early C20 when rear outshuts were
added.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1 : 2 window front. On the 1st floor to right and centre are 20-pane sashes, the right-hand one is circa late C18. To the left is a 24-pane sash of the same date. On ground floor to right is a C19 small-paned casement window. To its left is a C20 stable-type door under a slate hood to the Mole Hole. Coplett's Cottage to left has a late C18 or early C19 horizontal sliding sash with an early C2O 4-pane sash to its right. Doorway is at the rear of the house.
Interior: has rough unsubstantial beams and a rough chamfered wood lintel to the
fireplace in Coplett's Cottage.
