Row of 6 headstones bordering path from S porch of church, probably reset from
elsewhere. All 6 date from late C18 or early C19, are stylistically similar,
with segmental heads stepped at corners. Limestone. Details of stones as
follows (N to S):
(i) John Stopp. Date illegible. Shows winged putto, surmounted by swags
and flanked by urns and drops.
(ii) William Stopp. Date illegible. Depicts winged putto, surmounted by
swags and flanked by urns and drops.
(iii) William Stopp. d.1796. Central oval panel contains mourning female
standing by flaming urn. This is flanked by 2 oval medallions showing
profile busts, and surrounded by scrolled foliate decoration.
(iv) William Stopp. d.1811. Shows swagged urn above foliate scrollwork.
(v) Mary Edwin (?) Date illegible. Central oval panel contains lamb and
flag. Flanked by husk garlands and winged putti.
(vi) Elizabeth, wife of Jonas Welch, daughter of William and Mary Stopp
d. Oct 21 1831 aged 53. Shows garlanded urn flanked by foliate
scrollwork.
Further headstones continue the row southwards, but are later C19 and are not
of Special interest.
