metres south-east of West
Calverts House

GV II

Cow byre with hayloft above. Dated 1695. Coursed rubble, stone slate
roof. 2 storeys, 2 first-floor windows. Central board door. Single-light
chamfered windows. Shaped kneelers, ashlar copings. Single-storey lean-to
projection to left. Pent-roofed single-storey lean-to projection to right,
formerly pig-sty. Rear elevation: board door in ashlar quoined, chamfered

surround with "1695" on lintel. External steps to hayloft. Interior: line
of original roof of much steeper pitch, probably for thatch. 2 moulded
arch-braced collar-beam roof trusses, with short crown-posts, ridge plate
and butt purlins, 1 curved-principal rafter truss with collar and trenched
purlins. The original purpose of this building seems to have been neither
domestic nor agricultural.
