II*
Barn. Late C13 or early C14 and C15. Timber-framed with C20 brick walls and
corrugated iron roof replacing original thatch. Eight aisled bays from east
to west. First four trusses from west and first three bays appear to be
complete. Posts unjowelled and reversed assembly in one truss,
notched-lapped and tenoned braces and passing braces from tie beam to arcade
posts and aisle posts. Queen posts above tie beam to collar and braced to
purlins with notched-lapped and tenoned passing brace to purlins with
notched-lapped and tenoned passing brace from collar to tie beam. Splayed
Joggled under squinted butt scarf joints to aisle plates. An intermediate
rail now removed between posts of centre bay may indicate original opening.
In the C15 the barn was extended by five trusses and four bays with queen
strut roof and conventional framing with parallel braces from arcade posts to
aisle tie and sill. Face halfed scarf joints may suggest a later date or
repair.
