Description

ISLINGTON

TQ3084NW MARKET ROAD
635-1/43/619 (North side)
Railings, walls, gate piers and
gates to Caledonian Park

GV II

Railings, walls, gate piers and gates to Caledonian Park,
extending for c.250 metres on the south side of the Park in
Market Road, and for c.120 metres on the east side in
Shearling Way. 1854. Probably designed by J.B.Bunning. Cast
iron with brick panels at the corners. The piers are panelled
antae crowned with antefixae and bracketed finials. The
railings have a coved plinth, cylindrical rails except for two
at the centre of each bay which are square in plan and
bracketed, and bud finials, every other one of which is taller
and pierced. The gates follow the main lines of the railings
with the addition of a curved brace across each panel and a
circle in the resulting spandrel; there are seven gates on the
south side and five on the east, and the central gate has
pairs of piers and a narrower gate on each side. The
south-east corner of the Park is chamfered in plan with three
panels of yellow brick set in Flemish bond with one
flat-arched entrance, now blocked, stone plinth and brick
coping.
The existing railings etc. are only a part of those which
originally provided a boundary to the Caledonian Market; some
of the gate piers and gates are damaged, there are occasional
gaps in the railings, and there is a gap of c.15 metres in the
existing railings in Shearling Way.
