Terrace of 8 houses, now partly flats. 1868 by Robert
Griffiths of Stafford for the Stafford Land, Building and
Improvement Co. Ltd.
Red brick with polychrome brick and stone dressings and Welsh
slate roof with red and polychrome brick ridge stacks.
Classical in overall style with elaborate detailing.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, basement and attic, the end houses
projecting forward and having the attic as a full extra floor.
The houses are mainly of a 3-window range of 2/2 sashes with
polychrome decorated arched and stone sills on brackets with
iron guards. Recessed white brick porches have entrance arches
with cornices on brackets and obelisks at corners. Sill bands,
polychrome frieze band and modillion cornice. Dormers with
curved roofs. Houses at left end have canted bays. To rear
several houses have French windows to the raised ground floor
with cast-iron balcony balustrading.
HISTORY: the Staffordshire Land, Buildings and Improvement Co.
Ltd was set up to build villas on the outskirts of Stafford,
having bought the Rowley Hill estate. The company was
disbanded after Nos 1-8 (cons) Lawn Road was built. Robert
Griffiths was the county Surveyor and is well known as an
architect of Lunatic asylums.
