Description

LEEK

SK9856SE FYNNEY STREET
611-1/7/65 (West side)
Ferne-Lea and Cranford and attached
wall

II

Pair of houses. Dated 1912. By Reginald Longden, architect.
Brick with plain-tiled roofs.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4-window range. Simple Arts and Crafts
style, reminiscent of Lutyens. Balanced asymmetry, with outer
gables of differing design: Left-hand gable itself
asymmetrical, with doorway to right and massive chimney stack
anchoring right of gable. Main roof sweeps down to ground
floor level to left. Off-centre doorway in stepped
round-headed archway. Tripartite mullioned window above. Tall
mullioned and transomed stair window in main range to right of
gable, and single 3-light mullioned window at first-floor
level beyond, with side entrance of Ferne-Lea below.
Right hand of range forms wide gabled front of Ferne-Lea:
doorway to right in simple chamfered architrave, with 4-light
mullioned window on each floor alongside. Windows throughout
have leaded panes. Several axial and end wall stacks, all with
diamond shafts. Rear elevation has a stronger symmetry, with 2
full-height canted bay windows.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: flanking wall pierced by 2 stilted
archways links the building to the adjacent Highbarn (qv).
