Molewood House and Molewood Lodge

II

House, formerly miller's house to Molewood Mill (not
included), now subdivided into 2 dwellings. c1840, altered and
extended late C19 and 1920s. Brick, with lined-out stucco
beneath low pitched Welsh slated roofs behind parapeted south
front, but exposed as low gables on west. Stuccoed chimneys.
PLAN: 3-bay front with central entry, and long rear service
wing. Enlarged to double width in 1920s.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. First floor has 3 recessed 16-pane sash
windows, twin blind boxes with sawtooth valances, stucco
sills, plat band at first-floor level. Ground floor with 2
larger 16-pane sashes, left and right of central doorway, with
twin leaf half-glazed doors with flush lower panels. These are
recessed within a panelled surround, and flanked by fluted
Tuscan Doric pilasters with modern cornice hood above.
East elevation has ground floor doorcase with Tuscan Doric
fluted antae and responds, C20 flat hood, and half-glazed door
with recessed lower panel.
West (garden) elevation has double gabled low pitched roofs
with 2 long 12-pane sash windows each with blind box to first
floor, that to left above late C20 French windows.
Left of garden elevation has wing built in early 1920s with
multi-pane metal casement windows and hipped asbestos tile
roof.
INTERIOR: has simple mid C19 joinery, 6-panel doors with
central moulded bead and broad architraves, open string stair
with nosed treads, moulded hardwood handrail and stick
balusters.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Molewood Mill was included in the Domesday
Book for Bengeo, and continued in operation as a corn mill
until 1888 when it was bought by Hertford Corporation to
establish a pumping station for the town's water supply.
