Description

PADSTOW CHURCH STREET (south side), Padstow
SW 9075-9175
8/58 Gates and gatepiers at north
entrance to churchyard

GV II

Pair of gatepiers and gates. Circa early C19 gates with gatepiers rebuilt in circa
mid C19. Wrought iron gates with stone rubble piers and granite pyramid caps. The
large but squat piers are almost square on plan with the main gate attached to one
pier and the 2 narrower leaves attached to the other. The gate was designed to
function as a kissing gate when closed but may also be fully opened.
The gates are probably of local manufacture with a central panel decorated with
scroll patterns and the upright stiles terminating in spear-shaped finials.
QV. Gates and gatepiers at south east and north west entrances to churchyard.
