Includes Nos 2 and 4 Octagon Road.
Almshouse group. Circa 1912, perhaps by Sir Reginald Blomfield . Red brick with
moulded brick pilaster quoins to main block, hipped pyramidal tiled roof with hipped
roof wing behind. End ridge stack to wing, tall stack with projecting breast on
left hand return front of main block. 2 storeys to front, 1 storey to rear. 2 bays
to front, casements with segment-headed entrance arch to right on ground floor. Single
casement on either side of left hand return front chimmney breast on both floors,
flanked to left by entrance arch to No.2 Octagon Road. Wing facing Octagon Road has
central casement, flanked to right by oculus and to left by entrance arch to No.4.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading
architects of the day.
