Farmhouse, now forming 2 private dwellings. Probably early C16 remodelled in C17
and extended probably in C18. Painted rendered cob and stone. Thatch roof, gable
end to left, hipped to right end. Axial brick stack (formerly left gable end
stack) front lateral hall stack with drip and tapered cap, and brick stack across
front angle at right end. Originally 3-room through-passage plan, formerly open
hall house, floored over in C17 and later divided at upper end of hall and extended
at left end by addition of extra room and staircase.
2 storeys. 2-window range. C19/C20 fenestration with one 2-light and a 3-light
window, 2-panes per light. Slated lean-to porch to left-hand cottage. C20 door to
through-passage doorway.
Interior: 3 very fine plank and muntin screens survive to Rose Cottage, 2 to each
side of through-passage, 8 panels wide to right side with old 3 plank door, 6
panels wide to left side with front end plastered over. Both screens have scroll-
stopped chamfered muntins. Third screen at upper end of hall (the dividing
partition between the 2 cottages). 9 panels wide with doorway with chamfered
surround and scroll-stopped durns. The muntins are chamfered with mortice holes for
dais bench, now removed. Scroll-stopped ovolo moulded hall ceiling beam with
scratch-mouldings to the joists. Winder staircase to right of hall fireplace.
Scroll-stopped chamfered door surround to blocked doorway at head of stairs.
Chamfered beam to lower end with further winder staircase in rear right-hand
corner. Roof structure of several phases, with earliest truss surviving over lower
end, possibly originally short-legged crucks but the feet have rotted out. Collar
tenoned with soffit mortices to the principals, and above the collar short apex
pieces have had to be scarfed on to the tips of the principals to carry the ridge
piece. Smoke blackening to inner face, and to some of the purlins, otherwise the 2
possibly C17 pegged trusses over the hall are clean with 3 trusses introduced in
C20 between these and the earlier truss. Roof space over upper end not accessible.
