Description

CROSBY RAVENSWORTH MAULDS MEABURN
NY 61 NW (South End)

5/31 Coal storage and
cascade built under
driveway immediately
to north of entrance
to Flass House

GV II

Coal storage built into hillside under driveway, screened by ornamental
cascade. Erroneously referred to as an ice house. Constructed c.1850 when
house was rebuilt for Wilkinson Dent. Rough-dressed coursed stone with ashlar
parapet to driveway above and low ashlar enclosing wall fronting cascade. Water
emerges at top of large segmental-arched recess, decorated with upright sections
of limestone pavement, and cascades down over a series of clam shells of
increasing size before falling into a small pool; enclosing wall is c.2 ft high
with flat copings. Access to coal storage via segment-headed doorway to left of
recess; interior wall stone blocks with coal shute in south wall. Stepped roof
of corbelled slabs.
