4/54 Gates, gatepiers, wall,
steps and mounting block,
east of Church of St.
Cuthbert.
G.V. II

Retaining wall, mid C18; raised, and steps and mounting block added c.1763.
Gatepiers and north end of wall with piers, c.1740, the former relocated in
late C18, latter partly rebuilt early C20. Late C18 gates, renewed 1934.
Sandstone; Coade stone finials; brick mounting block and raised parts of
walls. Coursed random rubble north end of wall. Steel gates. Walls run
between south-east corner of churchyard and northernmost pier.
Vermiculate-rusticated gatepiers on roll-moulded plinths. Pedestal finials
have carved skulls and crossed bones in panels on east and west faces; and
flaming Roman oil lamps on ogee stems. 2-leaf gates, side panels and
overthrow, up 4 steps with coped string and glinters. Segmental overthrow
has central winged angel heads, arrowhead crestings and scrolls decorated
with water leaves. Similar ornament in double lockrail of gates and in
flanking panels. Fleur-de-lys ornament above lockrails and waterleaf
pendants suspended from top rails. Chamfered copings on walls, except at
north end. Remains of similar piers, with short ramped ashlar walls
adjoining inner faces, at each end of north part of wall.
