Headstones within the churchyard area of the Parish Church of St Mary defined by the path to the south porch on the west side, the boundary wall to the south, an unmarked boundary on the east side parallel to the path and in line with the east wall of the chancel, and the Church to the north

Headstones. Two early C18, 18 mid C18, 36 late C18, 41 early C19, 25 mid
C19, and remaining indecipherable late C18 and early C19. Limestone slabs
with moulded shaped heads and with Rococo and Greek Revival designs.
Lettering incised and usually painted black. Two groups, totalling ten
headstones (A and B on plan), are outstanding in craftsmanship and design and
date from 1731 to 1786. One headstone (k, on plan), has the mason's
signature 'D Wade', of Doddington. The headstones have been reset but remain
in family groupings. Thirteen examples have been described in detail as
representative of some of the groups.

Headstone (a on plan). Dated 1763. Limestone slab with moulded shaped head
terminating in scrolls, central crown with two trumpets flanked by
angel-heads and festoons of flowers. 0val convex plaque inscribed 'Thomas
Jarman - 1763'. Headstone (b on plan). Dated 1799. Limestone slab with
moulded, shouldered round head. Carved figure in oval medallion with C-S
vine and palm decoration. Round, slightly, convex plaque inscribed to 'Mary
Hoggard - 1799'. Headstone (c on plan). Dated 1746. Limestone slab with
moulded shaped head. Two angel-heads with scroll and flower swags.
Inscription on drape to 'Mary wife of Isaac Garner .... 1746'. Headstone (d
on plan). Dated 1776. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered and round
head. Dove with flanking angel heads, C-S scroll decoration enclosing round
plaque inscribed to 'Henry Neighbours .... 1776'. Headstone (e on plan).
Dated 1781. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered round head. Standing
figure of angel holding a trumpet rising from an urn with scull and bones.
Plaque inscribed to 'John Burges .... 1781'. Headstone (f on plan). Dated
1746. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered round head. Angel-head with
C-S scroll decoration and swags with round headed and shouldered plaque
inscribed to 'Mary daughter of William and Mary York .... 1746'. Headstone
(g on plan). Dated 1769. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered and round
head. Dove and cloud with two angel-heads and cartouche devices enclosing
circular plaque inscribed to 'Jacob Jarman .... 1769'. Headstone (h on
plan). Dated 1769. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered and round head.
Figure standing holding distaff with child in Gothic archway with drapes.
Slightly convex octagonal plaque with laurel wreath enclosing inscription to
'Mary the wife of James Eagle .... 1769'. Headstone (i on plan). Dated
1737. Limestone slab with round head terminating in scrolls. Angel-head
with folded wings, two floret designs. Raised round plaque inscribed to
'Willm Boyden .... 1737'. Headstone (j on plan). Dated 1808 and 1829.
Limestone slab, with moulded shouldered round head. Design with angel-head,
shell, and horns with corn and flowers. Double commemoration 'open book'
plaque to Marshall John son of Benm and Mary Bayin? .... 1808, also Marh Ann
their daughter .... 1815, also Benjamin Bayin? .... 1929. Headstone (k on
plan). Dated 1817, 1819, 1927 by D Wade, mason of Doddington. Limestone
slab with shouldered and round head. Angel-head and swags enclosing plaque
inscribed to 'Ann the wife of Bonfield Dunham .... 1827 also Ann the wife of
John Childs .... 1817, also John Childs .... 1819'.
Headstone (1 on plan). Dated 1809. Limestone slab with moulded shouldered
and round head. Design of seated figured medallion with drapes and
angel-head. Double plaque inscribed to George Fisher .... 1809 also his wife
Sarah'. Headstone (m on plan). Dated 1771. Limestone slab with moulded
shouldered and round head. Shouldered plaque enclosed with swags with bust
of man and woman above facing each other and pair of hands between placing a
wedding ring. Plaque inscribed to 'Mary the wife of John Richard .... 1771'
with the following inscription below: 'All you that stop to read this stone,
consider how soon she was gone, death doth not always warning give, therefore
be careful how you live'.
