Description

TQ 3177 VASSALL ROAD, SW9
(South side)
963/8/10039
No. 92 (Vicarage to the Church
Of St John the Divine

GV II

House, built as convent. 1954 by H S Goodhart-Rendel for St John the Divine church. Stock brick with pantiled roofs. Two storeys with former chapel in part of roofspace.
The style relates to G E Street's adjoining church (1870-4), which Goodhart-Rendel restored after bomb damage. Front elevation is entered to the left, under arch with flanking small window, six narrow windows with brick piers over and rose windows with steel-framed glazing in gable over. To the right of the facade, large and small gable forming slightly projecting bay with irregular fenestration and additional doorway. Foundation stone inscribed ADMG 1954. Interior not inspected.
This was a rare opportunity for Goodhart-Rendel to build an updated version of the secular Gothic style of G E Street, whose adjacent church he was restoring. The result was characterful and strong. The adjacent caretaker's house is an integral part of the composition.
