Villa, now house and office. c1834, with later alterations.
Pinkish-brown brick with painted stucco to all facades, Welsh
slate roof and cast-iron verandah with lead roof.
EXTERIOR: main range of 2 storeys with basement, attic to
right, 3 first-floor windows, with recessed 2-storey range
with basement and 1 first-floor window to left, and recessed,
2-stepped-storey blind bay to right. Full-height Doric
pilasters clasp angles of main range. First-floor band.
Pilaster strips between windows to main range. Steps to
entrance to left side range a glazed door with overlight in
tooled surround, otherwise 6/6 sashes throughout, taller to
ground floor in moulded architraves. Basement has two 8/8
sashes with multi-pane casements and glazed door.
Main range has frieze, cornice, blocking course and copings;
end stack.
Right return of 2 storeys with attic, 3 first-floor windows,
with projection to left. Full-height Tuscan pilasters clasp
angles.
Central entrance: 7 roll-edged steps to part-glazed panelled
double-doors, overlight with glazing-bars in porch with Tuscan
pillars, frieze, blocking course. To right a 1/1 sash with
blind box. First floor, central 6/6 sash with blind box,
otherwise blind openings, all with moulded architraves and
sills. First-floor band. Frieze, cornice, blocking course,
copings. Central 'pediment' contains 3/3 sash with moulded
architrave.
Garden facade, ground floor: French window of 10-pane centre
between 5-pane side-lights. 8-pane casement; otherwise six 6/6
sashes all with blind boxes and 3/6 sash. French window has
verandah with double-scroll-and-circle motif to uprights.
INTERIOR: shutters to ground floor; egg-and-dart moulded
cornice to rear room; 4-panel doors with Regency surrounds;
staircase has stick balusters and wreathed handrail.
HISTORICAL NOTE: Binswood Avenue was laid out c1828-1833,
those houses to the west were completed by 1834.
Nos 50-60 (even) Binswood Avenue (qqv) together with No.3
Arlington Avenue (qv) constitute an architectural group.
