DENT

SD69SE DENTDALE
162-1/6/68 (North side)
14/06/84 Pair of inter-linked barns approx.
5m south-east of Gap Farmhouse
(Formerly Listed as:
DENTDALE
Gap and Barn to south-east)

GV II

Inter-linked pair of bank barns. Probably C18 and earlier C19.
Mixed random rubble, part slobbered, with quoins and some
through-stones; stone slate roofs. L-plan: the earlier barn of
3 narrow bays on a north-south axis, facing west, and the
later attached at right-angles to its north-east corner, 4
bays, facing south. The west-facing range has a
segmental-headed wagon doorway in the centre under a prominent
porch coupled with an outshut to the left, all under a
carried-down roof. The other barn, built parallel to the
slope, is 2-storeyed with a hay-barn over shippons: the south
front has 3 shippon doorways with large monolith lintels, a
wider doorway to a loose-box at the east end with a wooden
lintel, and a square loading doorway in the centre of the
upper floor. The rear has a full-height wagon doorway to the
2nd bay.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Forms group with Gap Farmhouse (qv).
Similar in plan and phasing to barns at Burton Hill (qv) and
Hewthwaite (qv).
