Description

Earlier 19th century. L-plan farmhouse, comprising symmetrical 2-storey, 3-bay gabled principal block with single storey flat-roofed entrance porch centring principal (E) elevation; single storey, single bay wing projecting from rear elevation, continued to W as single storey 3-bay wing. Stugged sandstone walls with droved sandstone ashlar dressings. Base course. Block cornice to eaves (continuous across gables). Projecting cills to windows.

E (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical, single storey flat-roofed entrance porch projecting at ground in centre bay; 9-panel timber door with plate glass fanlight to S side, windows to E and N sides; cornice and blocking course at eaves; regular fenestration in flanking bays and at 1st floor.

N GABLE: single storey piend-roofed wing advanced at ground with blank gable rising behind.

S GABLE: single window to left at ground and 1st floors; W wing recessed at left.

W WING: 2-storey, 2-bay N and S elevations, regularly fenestrated at ground and 1st floors, blank W gable with single storey, 3-bay wing projecting at ground.

12 and 8-pane timber sash and case windows; graded grey slate roof; cast-iron rainwater goods; stugged sandstone and harled gablehead stacks, all coped with circular cans; overhanging ashlar skew copes.

SHELL HOUSE: ornamental garden building comprising shell-covered brick cylinder tapered above door lintel to domed roof; shells applied to interior walls.

A Group with Dalmeny House, including Barnbougle Castle, Barnbougle Gate Lodge, Dalmeny House Boundary Wall, Chapel Gate Lodge, East Craigie Gate Lodge, Edinburgh Gate Lodge, Dalmeny House Gardener?s Cottage, Dalmeny House Home Farm, Dalmeny House Home Farm Laundry, Leuchold, Leuchold Gate Lodge, Longcraig Gate Lodge, 1, 2, 3 and 4 Long Green, Newhalls Gate Lodge, Dalmeny House Stable Block and Dalmeny House Walled Garden (see separate listings).

The shell house is strikingly similar to one at Kingston Farmhouse, Dirleton, East Lothian, which has an oculus at the centre of the dome. Another single storey shell house is at Dunnottar, in Kincardine and Deeside.
