Mid 19th century farmhouse with Tudor detail, possibly incorporating earlier fabric. 2-storey, asymmetrical, roughly T-plan. Squared and coursed stugged ashlar, some raised margins. Rubble sides and rear.
S ELEVATION: L-plan, single bay wing projecting to W adjoining 3-bay E range. Doorway with heavily moulded architraves to left of E range. Canted window to right at ground with cornice and blocking course. 3 windows at 1st floor; gabled finialed dormerheads breaking eaves. Advanced wing to left of door with tripartite at ground, single window at 1st floor; hoodmoulds. Blind slit window in gable head.
W ELEVATION: 2 windows at 1st floor with ashlar gabled dormerheads and finials.
Further wing in re-entrant angle of T-plan at rear with lean-to single storey outbuildings.
Plate glass sash and case windows to S, 12-pane glazing pattern at rear. Grey slates, straight skews with bracketted skewputts. Ashlar coped end and wallhead stacks with cornice, decorative cans.
Extensive ashlar coped garden walls with square gatepiers and doorway to E with ashlar hoodmould and pediment; steps down with barley-sugar twist iron railings.
J Douglas of Athelstaneford Mains was renowned for breeding shorthorn cattle; this farmhouse and steading were presumably the results of his success. The garden contains unusual urns decorated with heads of cattle and an elaborate scalloped stone fountain with dolphins.
