Description

1912. Unusual footbridge over River Tyne, entirely in reinforced concrete. Level span raised between 2 stepped platforms, squared round-topped end piers, projecting moulded concrete coping, square concrete panels to outer facings. Access stairways each with 2 sets of broken concrete balusters, originally supporting 2 lines of round steel railings with spiral ends, now intact at NW end only.

Statement of Interest

Listed for the early use of reinforced concrete for an entire bridge structure. Replaced earlier Westfield Ford and timber (?) footbridge.
