Description

Early 18th century. Double chambered, 2-stage lectern dovecot converted to residential, circa 1975. Rubble sandstone with squared dressings; rat course, cill course to 2 pointed arch flight openings to S and to later square-headed insertions. Crowstepped skews. 2 doors to S (boarded doors). Various square windows to E, W and N elevations and further door to N. Grey slate roof with lead course mid pitch with row of flight-holes.

Similarly large lectern dovecots can be found nearby at Addistoun and Ratho Park, Ratho, and at Pencaitland, Pilmuir, and Biel in East Lothian. The Newliston dovecot was described by Niven Robertson as "the most commodious dovecot in Scotland". It contained 2,663 nesting boxes.
