Description

Picturesque GATELODGE of earlier 19th century appearance, incorporating early 19th century single-storey Georgian lodge subsequently altered and heightened in a picturesque barge-boarded style (roughly squared, snecked and stugged rubble above wallhead); rectangular plan, single storey and ayttic; asymmetrical, with single storey projecting bay facing onto Howdenhall Road. Later additions to NE and SE. ENTRANCE ELEVATION: barge-boarded gable, Serlian window (of original building) centre at ground, round-arched window centre at attic floor (astragals above, plain plate glass below); barge-boarded and gabletted entrance porch projects to left. Untidy swept dormer addition on NE flank. Single end stack at SE. Associated GATEPIERS: 4 square-plan, corniced ashlar piers (one damaged).
