Description

Frank Stirrat, 1878-9 (1879 datestone), won in
competition. Public halls, gifted by W S Dixon, Govan
Iron Works. Scots baronial and free-standing in open
site and set at angle to roadway. Lofty crow-stepped
main range, engaged square tower, with bartizans and
pyramidal slated spire, reaches only little higher,
arcaded tripartite entrance in SE gable, stilted arches
on fat columns, pair linked tall multi-paned mullioned
and transomed windows reach high above. Stugged and
snecked ashlar, polished dressings, slate roof.
Iron-railed low boundary wall, square gatepiers.
