Description

Earlier to mid 19th century. Rectangular-plan, 2-storey, 13-bay (8-bay at rear) near-symmetrical block subdivided to form 8 dwellings; Nos 1-4 comprising 1st floor flats entered at ground at E; Nos 5-8 comprising ground floor flats entered at ground at W. Tooled and pointed yellow rubble sandstone; polished margins; droved long and short surrounds to openings (painted at Nos 4, 5, 6, 7); raised droved quoins. Single narrow windows at rear (W elevation).

E (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION NOS 1, 2, 3 AND 4: replacement 2-leaf timber panelled door at ground in penultimate bay to outer left (No 1); single narrow windows at both floor in bay to outer left; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Replacement 2-leaf timber door at ground off-set left of centre (No 2); single narrow windows at both floors in bay to left; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Replacement 2-leaf timber door at ground off-set to right of centre (No 3); single narrow windows at both floors in bay to left; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Replacement timber door at ground in bay to left of penultimate bay to outer right (No 4); single narrow windows at both floors in bay to left; single narrow windows at both floors in bay to right; single windows at both floors in bay to outer right.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION NOS 5, 6, 7 AND 8: replacement timber door at ground in bay to outer left (No 5); opaque fanlight; single window at 1st floor above; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Replacement timber panelled door at ground off-set to left of centre (No 6); opaque fanlight; single window above; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Timber panelled door off-set to right of centre No 7; louvred fanlight; single window at 1st floor; single windows at both floors in bay to right. Replacement timber door at ground in penultimate bay to outer right (No 8); modern fanlight; single window aligned above; single windows at both floors in bay to outer right.

Variety of 2- and 4-pane timber sash and case windows; uPVC casements; part-opaque glazed timber casements. Graded grey slate roof; raised skews; regularly disposed rendered coped ridge and apex stacks; circular cans. Replacement rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen 1996.

Statement of Interest

An interesting and early example of a workers? housing scheme in Edinburgh. Relatively intact despite replacement glazing and doors.
