Description

Dated 1907. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay villa with corniced polygonal angle tower, mock half-timbering and single storey wing. Stugged, squared and snecked red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings. Chamfered arrises.

W (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: centre bay at ground with steps and flanking dwarf walls to deep set 2-leaf timber door with plate glass fanlight and relief carved doorhead with date, coloured

leaded glass to narrow light immediately to right and small window to left, similar slightly off-set windows at 1st floor and broad flat-roofed 4-light dormer above. Canted bay to left with 3 windows to each floor giving way to jettied half-timbered gablehead with small tripartite. Slightly advanced blank bay to right of centre rising into shouldered stack, angle tower (see below) beyond.

SW TOWER: battered base giving way to engaged 4-sided angle tower with window to each face at both floors and deep cornice surmounted by finialled polygonal roof.

S ELEVATION: broad advanced gable to right with 5-light canted window to each floor and half-timbered jettied gablehead with small tripartite, single window immediately to left at ground, and angle tower (see above) to outer left.

N ELEVATION: variety of elements including projecting single storey wing (former laundry/ancillary) with louvered opening to right and small window breaking eaves into timbered dormerhead with adjacent small stack on return to right.

4- and 6-pane timber sash and case windows with leaded glazing pattern to upper sashes over plate glass lower; multi-pane glazing pattern to dormers. Red tiles. Coped ashlar stacks with cans. Overhanging eaves with plain bargeboarding. Cast-iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.

INTERIOR: screen door with figurative coloured glass and timber staircase.

Built for Hugh Paton, the Register of New Buildings unfortunately does not record the name of the architect of 'Arthurlie'.
