14/221 Well Cottage (formerly listed
as Bray Cottage)


House. C17 or earlier with C18 and C20 alterations. Rendered stone rubble
and possibly some cob. Thatched roof with gabled left end and hipped right
end, the right hand part of roof is clad in slate. Left hand gable end and
right hand front lateral stone stacks with brick shafts and slate
Plan: 2 room plan with a central cross or through passage into which a
staircase has been inserted. The left hand room is heated from an end stack
the right hand room has a lateral stack at the front and a small unheated
room at the back is a short wing, behind which is a single storey
outbuilding converted into a kitchen.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical, 3-window south east front with a
projecting lateral stack to right with slate weathered set-offs and tall red
brick shaft. 3 C20 metal-frame 2-light casements on first floor and 3 C19
2-light casements on ground floor, all with glazing bars and slate sills.
Doorway to left of centre with C19 panelled door and late C19 or C20 porch
with lean-to shingle roof and C20 glazed door.
Rear: C20 glazed door on right and 9-pane fixed light window to its left.
To left a short gabled 2-storey wing extended in a single storey outbuilding
(now the kitchen).
Interior: Left hand room has later ceiling joists and fireplace with slate
jambs and flat arch. Right hand room also has later joists and blocked
fireplace in front lateral stack. On first floor plank doors.
