House. Circa 1835 remodelled and extended in circa mid to late C19 and
altered in C20. Stuccoed stone. Slate hipped roofs, the main central block
with embattled parapet and cornice. Side chimney stacks concealed in the
battlements.
Plan: The central block is the original house, it has a double depth square
plan with 2 principal rooms and a veranda on the south front side probably
originally smaller service rooms at the back. The entrance is on the right
hand (east) side originally giving into an axial passage leading to the
stairhall at the rear centre. Later in the C19 the house was remodelled and
extended, the partition between the entrance passage and rear right hand
room was removed forming a large entrance hall, a large 2-storey 1-room plan
wing was built set back on the right hand side, apparently for a billiard
room but now the drawing room. A single storey service wing was built set
back on the left side which was partly raised to 2 storeys in the C20 and a
conservatory added in the angle in front. In the late C20 a porch was built
on the right side in the angle with the wing.
Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. 1:2:2 window south front, the centre 2
window block is the original house with an embattled parapet cornice and
pilasters, C19 12-pane sashes on first floor (right hand restored) and large
sashes with margin panes and low sills on the ground floor. Across the
ground floor of the original house a rebuilt veranda with a tented
corrugated iron roof on timber posts. C20 flat roof dormer. The right hand
return has a C19 sash with glazing bars on first floor over a C19 panelled
door with a rectangular overlight and a large late C20 glazed porch. Set
back to right the late C19 2 storey 2-window wing with 12-pane sashes and
string course. Set back on left is single storey service wing, path raised
to 2 storeys on C20 and with C20 conservatory in the angle with the main
block.
Interior: The principal rooms have moulded plaster cornices. The stairhall
and the hall (near right hand room of the main block) have modillian
cornices and the stairhall has an open well staircase with moulded balusters
an ornate cast-iron newel and a moulded mahogany hand rail. The front left
hand room has a circa mid C19 marble chimneypiece with console brackets and
cast-iron grate. The front right hand room has wooden chimneypiece with
console brackets. The drawing room in the rear right hand wing has a later
Cl9 moulded plaster ceiling and C20 carved wooden chimneypiece. Most of the
Cl9 joinery is intact including that on the first floor.
