Description

STRETE BURLESTON

SX84NW

Rose Cottage

5/242
II

Small house. Probably late C17 or early C18. Painted local slate rubble
with rendered south end wall; the top of the north end wall is rendered,
possibly over cob. Thatched roof with half-hipped left (north) end and
gabled right (south) end. Rendered stack slightly projecting on the right
hand (south) end with a short weathered shaft with slate cowling.
Plan: Small house at right angles to road and one-room plan in the main
range with an unheated outshut to the right across about two thirds of the
back; the outshut is probably an integral part of the original plan. The
main range is now one large room but might have been divided into 2 rooms
originally. The original entrance was probably at the centre of the west
front but the front doorway is now at the left hand (north) end of the rear
(east). There is a small C20 outshut on the left hand end of the west
front.
Exterior: 1 storey and attic. The west front was not accessible at the
time of the survey. The rear (east) elevation a C20 top-hung window in the
outshut and to right of the outshut a C20 glazed door with side lights. The
left hand (north) end facing the road has C20 metal frame casements on the
ground floor and attic, and to the left the corner is slate hung. The south
end elevation is rendered, has a slightly projecting stack and no windows.
Interior: Not accessible at time of survey (1988) but later ceiling joists
were observed.
