Cottage, formerly tollhouse. Early C19. Roughcast with slate-hung splayed three
sided end to road. Slate hipped roof. Two storeys. Three window splayed
front. Two-light casements with glazing bars, centre first floor blind. Central
plain doorway with plank door. Two chimney stacks on side wall. The Turnpike
Act for Newton Abbot to Kingswear was 1765 but this tollhouse appears to have
been built in early C19. Reference: The Turnpike Road System in England 1663-
1840 by William Albert, page 212.
