Description

SOUTH MILTON
SX 64 SE
4/117 Whitlocksworthy Farmhouse

G.V. II

Farmhouse. Probably C18 remodelled in early C19 but with earlier origins. Slate
rubble walls. Gable ended slate roof. Stone rubble stack at right gable which
tapers at the top with dripcourses. Brick stack on rendered rubble base at front
left-hand corner and 2 brick stacks to rear wing.
Plan: L-shaped plan: front range is entered though wide stairhall with larger
room to the right and small room to the left. Wing behind left-hand end consists
of a large room with cross passage and kitchen behind and dairy outshut at the
rear of main range. Most of the internal fittings are of the early C19 and even
the 2-panel doors in the rear part may simply be old-fashioned because it is the
service wing but the asymmetrical room layout and front suggest an earlier date.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3-window front with windows disposed to the
right. To right on the ground floor are 2 early C20 4-pane sashes, otherwise C19
horned 16-pane sashes. C20 part-glazed door with rectangular fanlight to right of centre. Long wing extending behind left end has 5 window front of similar 16-pane sashes and a 2-light C20 casement to left of centre on ground floor. To its right is a 2-panel door of C18 type which may be early C19. Lower outbuilding at the end of this wing with stone steps to 1st floor doorway.
Interior: the front part of the house has early C19 6-panel doors and a staircase with square newels, turned balusters and closed string. In the rear part of the house are several 2-panel doors of C18 type.
