Description

WEST ALVINGTON
SX 74 SW
5/195 Oldaway Farmhouse

II
Farmhouse. C17 with later C17 or early C18 addition, further remodelled and
extended in late C18. Slatestone rubble walls, plastered at the front. Gable
ended slate roof. Stone rubble stack at left gable end and the end of the right-
hand rear wing, very short stack at right gable end.
Plan: 2-room and probably through-passage plan, with roughly equal-sized rooms,
each heated by an end stack. Probably kitchen wing added behind right-hand room
in late C17 or early C18. A further remodelling of the house took place in the
late C18 when it was refronted and possibly at this stage the other unheated rear
wing was built behind the left-hand room.
Exterior 2 storeys. Regular 3-window front of late C18 small-paned sashes apart
from later C20 casement on ground floor to right. Central C20 leanto porch.
Interior: inaccessible at time of survey but may contain features of both main
periods and apparently has not been much modernised since earlier C20.
