Summerhouse. Circa 1770 -80, probably contemporary with Sharpham House ((qv))
and designed by its architect Sir Robert Taylor; extended in late C19.
Rendered, probably stone rubble. Flat roof concealed behind parapet. Late
C19 extension has gable-ended slate roof with deep eaves. Stack at side with
brick shaft.
Plan: Octagonal single cell plan with doorway at front and stack on left
side. Another doorway at back towards river now leads into a late C19 2-
storey rectangular extension at lower level with a balcony on its gable end
overlooking the River Dart.
Exterior: The original building is a single story octagon with a parapet and
moulded wooden modillion cornice. Doorway on north west front has moulded
wooden doorcase with pulvinated frieze and dentilled cornice and with C18 6-
panel door; approach by stone steps. The south and east sides of the octagon
overlooking the river have sash windows, the east with vertical glazing has
only, the south a later replacement. Below is the circa late C19 2-storey
extension which is at lower ground level and its gable end facing the river
has deeply projecting verges on timber braces, finial and a balcony with a
wooden balustrade on timber cantilevers.
Interior of original part is on octagonal room, virtually unaltered. It has
a moulded cornice, covered above with a moulded plaster acanthus centerpiece
to ceiling. The walls have moulded dado rail. C18 wooden chimneypiece with
moulded architrave and cornice. Opposite fireplace is a cupboard with C18
fielded panel double doors. Moulded wooden architrave to entrance on north
west side and on opposite side are steps down to panelled double doors,
originally external doorway, but now giving into late C19 extension.
