DARTINGTON

Said to have been the Sexton's house of the Church of St Mary (qv), now a
private house. Circa 1880 by J L Pearson the architect of the church.
Snecked grey limestone ashlar with sandstone dressings. Slate roofs with
gabled ends. Gable end and axial stacks with sandstone ashlar shafts, the
stack at the east gable end has set-offs and dismantled shafts.
Plan: Overall L-shaped plan. The front right hand projecting wing which
contains the entrance and stairhall to the left and front room to the
right. Behind the front room a kitchen/living room with the scullery and
back porch in a short wing to the rear left with an integral single storey
outhouse wing extending further left containing the wash-house coal house
and privy with a low walled enclosure at its gable end. Victorian Gothic
style.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical gabled elevations. West front has a
projecting gabled wing to right with 3-light stone mullion window on each
floor to right and doorway to left with a 2-centred chamfered stone arch
with a hoodmould and plank door, now enclosed within a C20 glazed gabled
porch. The left hand return to north has 2 staggered gables, the right
hand gable has a stone cross-mullion transom stair window and the left hand
gable has a 3-light stone mullion window. The right hand (south) return is
gabled to the right with a 4-light stone mullion window on the ground and
first floors and a blind wall to the left. Rear (east elevations has large
projecting gable end stack with set-offs and truncated porch doorway to
right. Contemporary integral single storey outhouse wing to right (north).
Most of the windows now have plate glass replacing the original leaded
panes.
Interior: staircase with stick balusters, roll-moulded handrail and newels
with ball finials. Plank doors.
