12/134 Lodge about 200 metres SE
of Dartington Hall


Lodge. Circa 1860-70, with C20 rear additions. Local grey limestone
rubble with ashlar quoins and chamfered plinth, and Bathstone dressings.
Steeply pitched slate roof with gabled ends with gableted apesees, moulded
kneelers and slate coping. Clay ridge tiles.
Plan: 2-room plan front range with central entrance passage and porch; the
larger left-hand room is heated from a front lateral stack and has a small
service room in a short wing behind farming an L-shaped plan. Another
slightly longer wing was added to the back of the right-hand room probably
in C20; later in c20 a single storey extension was built at the rear across
the two wings. Victorian Gothic style.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical, front. Large gable porch to right of
centre has moulded pointed arch doorway with run-out steps hoodmould and
plank door; one lancet each side of porch with leaded panes, saddle bars
and stanchions with floral finials. One window to right of porch in deep
double-chamfered opening with C20 metal-frame casement. To left of porch a
large projecting lateral stack with set-offs and a tall shaft with a cap.

There are no first floor windows on the front.
Ground and first floor window in right-hand/north east/gable end has C20
casements in double-chamfered stone surround. The left-hand (south west)
gable end and side of rear wing has C20 windows in enlarged window openings
now without surrounds.
Both the rear wings are gable-ended but only the original right-hand wing
has coping, apex and moulded kneeles. Later C20 small single storey flat
roof extension at rear across the ends of the two wings.
Interior: depressed 2-centred arch doorways either side of central passage
into the two front rooms. The left-hand room has chamfered centring beam
with steps supported on corbels. The right-hand room has exposed chamfered
