House. C16 with C17 parlour wing and C20 alterations and minor additions.
Local limestone rubble. Delable slate roof, gable end to right with large
stone rubble stack with tapered cap; and hipped end to left. Large stone
rubble projecting front lateral stack with set-offs and tapered cap.
Gable-ended rear wing also with gable end stack with tapered cap. Stair
tower in the angle with slate hung gable. Early crested ridge tiles
throughout.
Plan: the south (front) range is the original house, its plan uncertain
but it appears to have been open to the roof on the evidence of some smoke-
blackened roof timbers that have been reused in the C17 roof structure. In
circa early C17 the house was heavily remodelled and extended. The earlier
front (south) range has a 2-room plan with the smaller parlour to the left
heated from a front lateral stack and the larger kitchen to the right with
a gable end stack. There is a solid wall partition (but no sign of a
passage) between the 2 rooms and therefore there may have been a direct
entry into the right hand room. There is now a C20 partition in the right
hand into the right hand room. There is now a C20 partition in the right
hand room creating a wide central stair hall which has a C17 stair tower at
the back in the angle of a parlour wing which was added to the rear of the
right hand room (kitchen) forming an overall L-shaped plan. Plasterwork in
the parlour wing is dated 1634 which probably dates the building of the
wing but the remodelling of the main range may be earlier C17.
Exterior: 2 storeys. South front: asymmetrical 4 window range. C18 C19
and C20 2 and 3 light casements with glazing bars; first floor to right of
centre ils a late C17 2-light casement with leaded panes and chamfered on
the inside. Projecting front lateral chimneys tack with set-offs and tall
shaft to left of centre and with slated pentice canopy over doorway and
windows to right which has straight joints in masonry under the cills. The
present doorway has chamfered timber lintel and C20 moulded plank door.
Raking masonry buttress to rear wall of main range.
Early C17 rear wing of 2 storeys and attic with C17 gabled stair tower in
the angle; on the inner side of the rear wing a large C20 french window.
On the outer side of the rear wing a later outshut and to its left a C20
outshut at gable end of main range.
Interior:left hand room (parlour) has a chamfered cross beam with hollow
step stops and joists with bead mouldings, and a front lateral fireplace
with a chamfered timber lintel with hollow step stops. The right hand room
has a chamfered cross beam and a half-beam with step stops and unchamfered
joists; gable end fireplace with bar and broach stops and stone lined oven
with a stone framed opening. Wide central hall with a chamfered cross beam
with step stops. Parlour in rear wing has reused ceiling beams originally
plastered and a small section of plaster remaining a large gable end
fireplace with an ovolo moulded timber lintel with bar land hollow step
stops; moulded plaster frieze above lintel with fleur-de-lis and other
motifs.
First floor chamber (over the parlour) in the wing has a gable end
fireplace with ovolo moulded timber lintel with hollow step stops and
moulded plaster panel above dated 1634 and with initials G over CM with
fleur-de-lis and sprays of flowers; on side of chimney-breast a moulded
plaster fleur-de-lis; the fireplace hearth is slate-on-edge but covered in
concrete screed.
Chamber over the kitchen (right hand room) has a gable end fireplace with a
chamfered timber lintel with hollow step and bar stops and a wooden
doorframe to right with a cambered head and a plank door with scratch
mouldings.
Roofs: the roof over the main range is basically a C17 pegged structure
but it has some surviving or more likely reused smoke-blackened rafters, 4
purlins and one principal. The roof over the rear wing is also C17 with
morticed apexes cranked collars lapped and pegged to the faces of the
principals. The stair tower roof is C20.
