SX75NE Great Englebourne
Large farmhouse near site of a former manor house. 1823. Stuccoed stone
rubble. Asbestos slate low pitched hipped roof, the lead rolls replaced with
ridge tiles. Deep eaves with paired soffit brakcets and moulded cast iron
gutters. Band at first floor level. Rendered ridge chimney stacks.
Plan: Overall square plan, the principal rooms on either side of central hall
with stairs in well at rear of hall and service rooms in range across rear.
Exterior: 2 storeys. South east front 2:1:2 bays, centre advanced with eaves
and roof breaking forward above. Central portico with 2 pairs of Doric
columns supporting entablature with deep cornice but without triglyphs and
with 3-panelled double doors. Tall 12-pane ground storey sashes with low
cills. Small 12-pane first storey sashes, centre first storey 16-pane sash.
Right hand return (north east side) 1:2:1 bays, centre recessed, 12-pane
sashes, right hand ground storey garage doors. Left hand return (south west
side) 3-bays, centre recessed, 16-pane sashes, centre ground storey C20 garden
doors. Late C19 conservatory on south west corner.
Interior very intact and retains most of the original joinery including
panelled window shutters and doors etc and plaster ceiling cornices and
marble chimneypieces. Rounded stair well at back of hall has egg-and-dart
cornice and lantern which has been renewed; geometric stairs with open
string, shaped tread ends and wreathed handrail.
Note: Sir William Russell Flint is said to have stayed at Great Englebourne
and the house and stables are depicted in some of his paintings.
