SX75NE Hernaford Cottage
Farmhouse, converted into cottages and now reunited into one house. Probably
16 or earlier, remodelled circa early to mid C19. Rendered stone. Asbestos
slate hipped roof and half-hipped rear wing. Rendered stone chimney stacks.
Plan and development: Possibly a 3-room and through passage plan originally,
the lower end to the right, the through passage front and rear doorways
blocked and lower side partition removed. Relatively small lower room which
has possibly been shortened. Axial hall stack backing onto former passage and
lateral stack at rear of large inner room which has a stair turret at higher
end. Wing at rear of high end with possible garderobe on its higher side.
There is another projection at front of inner room through which a doorway was
inserted in C19. Another doorway to a passage which was inserted into high
end of hall. Circa C19 lean-to outshut at rear and lean-to at high end in
angle with the stair turret.
Exterior: 2 storeys. West front with asymmetrical fenestration disposed
towards the left end. 4-window range. 16-pane sash on ground and first
storeys of right end. Central ground floor tripartite sash to hall with 16-
pane and flanking 4-pane sashes. 3-light and 1-light casements above and 3-
light casement to ground and first storey of left end, all with glazing bars.
Pair of doorways to left of centre with porches with rendered stone walls,
open fronts and raking scantle slate roofs, panelled and plank doors. The
stair turret at north end has small slit window.
Interior: Plastered partition between inner room and hall now forming higher
side of inserted passage whose lower side has later brick partition. Fire-
places blocked and later fireplaces inserted. Stair turret has winder stairs
rising from end wall of inner room. The wing at rear has what might be a
garderobe - it is a recess in wall of chamber and below is a cupboard in a
recess. The projection on front of high end does not show inside. There is
a blocked doorway at rear of lower end but the putative front doorway opposite
has been blocked. All the ceiling beams are covered and few interior details
are exposed. Circa late C17 or C18 roof trusses with collars halved and
pegged to face of principals; rafters replaced. Rear wing roof not
Note: This was probably the main house at Hernaford before the early C19
Hernaford Farmhouse (qv) was built. Hernaford was first recorded in 1285 and
it was a medieval mansion (Hoskins).
