GV II

House, formerly a farmhouse. Probably C16, remodelled in late C17 or early
C18 and again in late c19. Rendered stone rubble. Welsh slate roof with
hipped ends, rear pitch clad in asbestos slates. Raised eaves. Large
rendered lateral stack at rear and another lateral stack at rear with rebuilt
shaft. Also rebuilt stack at left end.
Plan and development: 3 room and through passage plan, the lower end to the
right and stairs inserted later into passage. Lateral stacks at rear of hall
and lower end. Gable end stack at left end possibly only heated chamber of
inner room. Later lean-to to outshut at rear and at lower end.
Exterior: Two storeys. East front four window range. Late C19 or C29 4-pane
sashes. Ground floor left of centre C20 bay window. First floor to right
of centre late C19 or C20 2-light sash. To right of centre late C19 or early
C20 porch. Lean-to on right hand lower end.
Rear (west) has corrugated asbestos sheet lean-to roof to outshut and scantle
slate roof canopy to left.
Interior: Solid wall between hall and inner room. Hall fireplace blocked.
Lower right hand room has fireplace with chamfered timber lintel with run-out
stops.
The roof over the former hall has one surviving truss, possibly smoke-
blackened. It has straight principals and holes for threaded purlins. One
blade of similar but clean truss at higher left end. The other trusses are
later and have collars lapped and pegged to face of the principals.
Note: It seems that at least the hall may have been open to the roof
originally until it was floored, the eaves raised and reroofed possibly in the
late C17 or C18. According to the deeds the property was sold in 1690 by John
Trist of Hernaford (qv) to Francis Edmonds. The deeds are in the possession
of the owner.
