House, formerly a farmhouse. Circa late C16, remodelled in C18 with some C19
and C20 alterations. Roughcast stone rubble. Slate roof, gabled at higher
left end, half-hipped at lower right end. Large projecting rear lateral
rendered stacks at rear of hall and inner room with set-offs. Later lateral
stack at rear of lower end.
Plan: Three room and through passage plan. Lower end to the right. Rear
lateral stacks to hall and inner room, and unheated lower end. The hall was
probably never open to the roof although there is a slightly blackened
roof truss over the higher end of the hall. The porch was probably added to
the front of the passage in C17 and because the ground at the front is at
lower level the doorway is approached by a flight of 5 steps. The lean-to
outshut at the rear of the lower end is C10. The barn (qv) adjoining at
right angles to the higher end, left, was probably built in C18.
Exterior: Two storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window range. C19 and C20 2 and 3-
light casements with glazing bars, in small openings. C19 panelled door to
passage right of centre with timber lintel within probably C17 wide open-
fronted stone rubble porch with lean-to scantle slate roof and deeply
chamfered wall plate inside on right, slate-topped seats inside and small
windows either side. The porch is approached by flight of 5 slate steps
from lower ground level in front. To left in front hall the wall has later
raking buttress of rendered masonry. The rear has two large projecting
rendered lateral stacks at higher end with set-offs and C20 lean-to at lower
end.
Interior: Partition between hall and inner room removed. Solid wall
partitions between passage and hall and passage and lower end. Hall and
inner room have deeply chamfered cross beams with hollow slightly stepped
stops. Rear lateral hall fireplace is blocked with C20 fireplace. Rear
lateral inner room fireplace has dressed slate jambs and C20 timber lintel.
Lower room has roughly chamfered longitudinal ceiling beam. Blocked timber
mullion window at front of hall exposed inside. Passage rear doorway has
old wooden frame and plank door. Two later stairs, one rising from hall
to chamber above inner room, the other rising from lower side of passage.
Roof: 3 trusses over higher end have threaded purlins and ridge, unchamfered
cambered collars with double notched lapped joint, and morticed apex. The
ridge piece purlins and rafters survive over the higher bay only. The
truss over the higher end of the hall is slightly blackened on the hall side
only. The other trusses over the hall and lower end are probably C18 and
the cambered collars are halved and pegged to the faces of the principal
rafters.
