House, now shop, office and flats, c 1500 and extensively altered and added to
in C17, C18, C19 and C20. Roughcast, brick and rubble, tiled roofs with some
stone slate verges, gabled and half-hipped. There are a number of irregularly
positioned brick stacks. The original building was an open hall with an east
cross wing. The hall was chambered and a chimney inserted in the Cl7 and a
west cross wing added in the C18. Few early features survive externally. At
the south end of the east wing are the remains of a large chimney in squared
greensand. To the north of the same wing is a chimney of probably C18 origin.
The market cross facade is of 2 storeys. The ground floor has double doors under
a segmental arch to the left, a 3-light C19 shop front, another door and a
fixed 3-light window. Above is a 3-light wooden casement with glazing bars.
Internally, both the east wing and the central range have cruck trusses with
wind braced purlins, The central range has a ceiling of deep chamfered inter-
secting beams. The building is listed because of its plan form, remaining
early features and its relationship to other buildings rather than for the
