Description

LYDLINCH LYDLINCH VILLAGE
ST 71 SW
4/68 Blackmore Farm
4.10.60 II
Farmhouse, probably C17 origin, extensively remodelled and extended mid-C18 and
later. Rubble and brick, partly rendered, tiled roof with gable ends and end brick
stacks to original range. 2 storeys, 4 bays (to original range). Wooden casements
with glazing bars of 3-lights on the ground floor and of 2-lights on the first
floor. Second bay from right has 4 flush-panel door in a moulded wooden frame with
a tiled hood on wooden brackets. Over is a round, bulls-eye window. To the left
is a 1-shaped brick extension (Flemish bond with flared headers) presenting a half-
hipped gable to the front. It has a plat band and contains stables and storage rooms.
To the north are a wing of rubble and brick and C19 lean-tos. Internally there is a
deep chamfered axial beam. One room has C18 fielded panelling with moulded skirting,
dado rail and cornice. Oak stairs with close strings, turned newels and balusters and
moulded handrails. A number of C18 flush panelled doors in original frames remain.
The house probably originated in the C17 as a 3-room cross passage plan, the staircase
being inserted into the cross passage, the eaves raised and the house extended and
altered in the C18. "RCHM, Dorset, vol III" p 142, no 17.
