Note that the name of the pub is NOT "The Bakers Arms", nor "The Baker's Arms", nor "The Bakers' Arms". The Listers got it wrong !

It is "The Baker Arms" - i.e. the Arms of the Baker family; specifically, of Sir Edward Baker. The motto is "Finis coronat opus" = "The end crowns the work." That motto is also the motto of the Seychelles. Around 1800, Sir Edward lived at Ranston Park, Iwerne Courteney, Dorset. The land upon which the pub now stands may well at that time have been part of Sir Edward's Ranston estate.
