FONTMELL MAGNA

------------------------------------
ST 81 NW FONTWELL MAGNA EAST ORCHARD

1/55 Meadow Cottage

II

Cottage, C17, partially refaced C19. Coursed rubble ground floor; front upper floor
in C19 brick (English bond), rear wall upper floor rendered (said to be wattle and
daub). Half-hipped thatched roof with brick stack part in along ridge right.
2 storeys and attic, 3 window range. Ground floor openings under segmental brick
heads. C19 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars. Plank door under thatched
porch between first and second bays. Another plank door to extreme right.
Internally there is an open fireplace with a cambered, chamfered bressummer. Deep
stop chamfered ceiling beams and wall-plates. One beam is inscribed 'Charles Hunt
1842' probably indicating the date at which it was encased. Roof structure where
visible appears to be of collar-beam trusses. It appears at one time to have been
divided into two cottages.
