4/160 Kennel Cottages

Hunting Kennels, now a pair of cottages, c. 1770 with alterations at a
number of later dates. Probably by Peter Beckford for himself. Brick
(Flemish bond with the original central bay in header bond). Tiled roof with
end brick stacks to ends of original range and to gable of an extension right.
Originally symmetrical. 2. storeys, 6 window range with later additional
bay right. Central bay pedimented. 2-light casements with glazing bars.
Ground floor rooms have segmental brick heads with stone keystones.
C20 part-glazed door. Left quoin has chainage in blue headers. Many original
openings blocked. Cat-slide roof to the rear. The building closely
resembles a design depicted in Beckford's 'Thoughts on Hunting' (1781), an
important work in the history of hunting. (Peter Beckford Esq., Thoughts on
Hunting in a Series of Familiar Letters to a Friend, 17th ed. 1930, first ed.
1781. RCHM Dorset, vole IV, P. 155, no. 4., Newman, J. and Pevsner, N., The
