1857. The tunnel was built after Brunel had been persuaded not to drive a cutting
through the Camp. His most influential persuader was the Rev William Barnes,
Rector of Winterborne Came, the Dorset dialect poet, and the initial impetis
behind the foundation of the Dorset County Museum. The tunnel is an early instance
of civil engineering respecting ancient monuments, and its entrances are included
for that reason. Red brick. Band. Parapet. Curved flanking walls. Rusticated
ashlar voussoirs.
